“Seat 23F: The Beginning of the Back Row Chronicles”

Image
Tomorrow, I’ll take my first work flight. I’ll wake up too early, forget something minor but important, and head to GSO with the quiet buzz of a guy who knows this is just the start of something. Maybe not something glamorous. Definitely not something luxurious. But something. This morning, I checked in through the American Airlines app. You know the one—shiny buttons, polite notifications, and zero effort to cushion the blow when it informs you where, exactly, you’ll be sitting. Seat 23F. The very last seat on the Embraer 175. The caboose of the cabin. The throne behind the throne—if you consider the lavatory a throne, which I will be doing by proximity alone. I won’t just be near the bathroom—I’ll be practically fused to it. So close, I’m pretty sure the flight attendants will start using me as a landmark: “Turn right at Nate, and you’ll find the The Rear Admiral’s Quarters.” I’ll catch every waft of soap pods and disinfectant, hear every flush like a percussive beat, and get as...

Let’s Roll (How a Discontinued Turquoise Suitcase Found Me on the Clearance Rack—and Became the Start of Something New)

The Right Bag for the Road Ahead My luggage search has finally come to an end. And looking back, I think I knew it was over the moment I sat down in that quiet corner of the Travelpro factory outlet. Something in me—something older, maybe wiser—knew it was right to wait. Even though it is an entire TWO days away from my first flight that has been booked for weeks. Because this isn’t just a piece of luggage. Not to me. This isn’t just a tool to haul socks and chargers from airport to airport. It needed to be more. It needed to feel like a beginning. A new beginning—not a break from the past, but a continuation, a next chapter. Something familiar yet fresh. I’m on the cusp of 50, straddling the line between where I’ve been and what’s still to come. And I want this part of the journey to feel intentional. To feel right . And that’s when I found it: the Atlantic Ultra Lite 4 in turquoise . Smooth as can be, no ridges or dimples.. Discontinued. Heavily discounted. A color that pops ju...

The Luggage Spiral: A Cautionary Tale of Wheels, Wishes, and Wallets

Image
There are rabbit holes, and then there’s whatever this was. I’ve now spent more time researching luggage than I did naming two of my children. Hours. Actual hours. Possibly days. Definitely most of several nights. Time I’ll never get back. Time I could’ve spent doing literally anything else, like solving world hunger, learning Mandarin, or rearranging the garage again just to feel something. But no. I used that time to scroll, click, read, and doubt. To obsess. I want you to understand something: everybody sells luggage now. When I say everybody, I mean Home Depot sells luggage. So does Lowe’s. Somewhere out there, a guy is probably buying a new toilet and thinking, “You know what? I do need a hardshell carry-on.” I’m not asking for much. Just a set of bags that’ll last through some heavy travel without looking like they were used to smuggle bricks through a war zone. I want something clean on the outside, something smooth. No wild ridges. No giant logos embossed like I’m...

The Great Suitcase Spiral: Overthinking My Way Into CAT Deployment Prep

The Great Suitcase Spiral: Overthinking My Way Into CAT Deployment Prep Before getting hired as a catastrophe auto adjuster, I thought the hard part would be learning the software or studying car damage estimates. I was wrong. The hardest part—so far—has been choosing a suitcase. Yes, a suitcase. One single piece of luggage has consumed an embarrassing amount of my time, brain power, and internet bandwidth. If you're preparing for a CAT deployment, or any life that requires constant travel, you might be nodding already. Because this isn't just about luggage. It's about control, comfort, and the illusion that the right suitcase will somehow make all the unknowns feel manageable. The Spiral Begins At first, I thought: I'll just grab something with wheels. That led to: Well, it should be durable. Maybe hard shell? No, wait—soft shell has more give. Then I stumbled into the rabbit hole of suitcase reviews, YouTube videos of travel influencers packing for Bali, and...
